In 1984, the Mainburg, Germany based company Eder started to build Caterpillar's first wheeled excavators. The 224 was the largest model of this series, weighing about 19 metric tons (42,000 lb).

This model resembles a later version of this excavtor featuring a redesigned driver's cab.
