The D7E is Caterpillar's first dozer to be equipped with a diesel-eletric drivetrain. Here, the 235 hp diesel engine only poweres an electric generator which in turn feeds the electric motors on the crawler tracks. This is supposed to give a better handling to the machine as well as a lower fuel consumption.

The model is also equipped with an GPS receiver on the dozer blade for an automatic level control.
