Description | The R 981 HD is the ancestor of the current R 984 C.It weighed 65–75 metric tons (145,000–165,000 lb) an was powered by two(!) diesel engines of 160 hp each. When it came out in 1974, it was Liebherr’s largest excavator (followed in 1978 by the even larger R 991).The R 981 was replaced 1981 by the R 982. This model was made by Sijam, a company that unfortunatley doesn’t exist any more and was rather battered when I could purchase it for my collection. Since then, it is awaiting a thorough restoration. As it easily can be seen, this is the older version of this model with its ladders to the upper structure on the rear. The ladders were mounted on the side of the model at the later version. |
